Before the law stands a doorkeeper. A man from the country comes to this doorkeeper and asks to be admitted to the law.

The doorkeeper has to bend low to hear him, for the difference in their height has increased, much to the disadvantage of the man, "What is it you want to know now?" says the doorkeeper. "You are insatiable." "Everyone aspires to the law, " says the man, "so how is it that in all these years no one except me has demanded admittance?" The doorkeeper realises that the man is finished, and so that the dying man's ears can catch his words, he roars at him: "No one else could be admitted here; this door is meant only for you. Now I am going to shut it."
